£22,000,000 Heartlands Project

4th April 2008

Byways & Highways Ltd are pleased to announce that they have been appointed to produce the Travel Plan and address highway issues associated with the delivery of the recently approved Heartlands Project (http://www.theheartlandsproject.org.uk) in Pool, Cornwall.  The Heartlands Project was successful in its bid for £22,000,000 in Lottery Funding in November 2007.

Pool is the central area of the Camborne Pool Redruth (CPR) conurbation and is a significant element in the Objective One funded regeneration of the area.  Pool is historically important as one of the earliest and most productive copper and tin mining areas and is home to the very last Cornish tin mine at South Crofty.  Recently, much of Pool has been awarded World Heritage Site status, due to the surviving  historic mining landscape.

The Heartlands Project is an exciting and innovative scheme to protect and enhance this historic mining landscape whilst providing an attractive and contemporary use of the site that will benefit the CPR conurbation and the wider Cornish community.  The Heartlands Project forms a "Gateway" for visitors to the World Heritage Site and will consist of a mix of uses on the site, to include the arts, education, community building and space, a residential development and some retail and other business opportunities.

The challenge of our appointment is to address the restricted highway network through negotiation with the Highways Agency and to provide a sufficiently  robust Travel Plan whereby car borne visitors to the Heartlands Project will be the minority - no mean feat in this Public Transport challenged area of Cornwall.
