Affordable Housing

4th April 2008
Typical Affordable Housing DevelopmentOver the last 25 years or so, the housing market has developed in such a way that low income/first time buyers have been priced out of the "market value" housing stock.

A major difference between the previous social housing policies of the 20th century and the philosophy of affordable housing is that, unlike the council estates of the past, affordable housing should be integrated into developments with market value housing.  This is intended to ensure that the social exclusion fostered by the isolation of the old style council estates is not replicated.

Notwithstanding this, some developments can be wholly affordable housing.  In these cases, it is imperative that the very highest design standards are adopted.  These affordable developments should not be of such a size that they run the risk of becoming "self contained ghettos".  It is also important to ensure that affordable housing developments are well located with reference to Public Transport, daily services and employment opportunities.

Byways & Highways Ltd has been heavily involved in delivering several significant developments throughout the south west, which either include affordable housing elements or are entirely affordable housing.  We have gained a deep understanding of what the various Planning Authorities and the Highway Authority require in terms of sustainable, high quality affordable developments.  At Byways & Highways Ltd we have also developed a good and effective relationship with the Highways Agency, which has enabled the delivery of developments they have previously objected to.
