Hydrock Byways & Highways to support Rowing Club redevelopment

27th January 2011

Hydrock Byways & Highways has been asked to join the project team supporting the redevelopment of Plymouth Amateur Rowing Club's boathouse on the city's Embankment Road. The site is adjacent to a major traffic corridor linking the city centre with the A38 dual carriageway and Hydrock's initial role will be to identify improvements to current access arrangements and ways of enhancing sustainable travel to the site.

Hydrock Byways & Highways' specialist understanding of the transport needs of watersports clubs is proving extremely useful in this case. For example, a key problem is the current need to manoeuvre the boat trailer across the footway and onto a busy road. A laden boat trailer and tow vehicle is approximately the length of an articulated lorry, so removing the requirement to manually handle the trailer onto the road will bring significant safety benefits as part of the redevelopment.

The existing boathouse, built by the Club's members in the 1950s, is life-expired and the limited footprint has become a constraint to the Club's activities. Working with British Rowing and Woodford Architecture, the Club is seeking funding to comprehensively redevelop its facilities and create a landmark building on this key gateway to Plymouth. This will allow the Club to build on recent national and international racing successes, and to support its junior members, some of whom have gained places on the Great Britain national rowing squad.
