Workplace and Residential Travel Plans

8th February 2008
Cycling is good for youByways & Highways Ltd now offer a new service to clients to respond to DfT advice (www.dft.gov.uk) regarding Travel Plans and, more specifically, the role of the Travel Plan Coordinator.

The monitoring service is aimed at Local Authorities, Developers, Schools and private organisations.  Both workplace and residential Travel Plans need careful management to ensure their ongoing success and achievement of the identified targets.  Local Authorities will require the appointment of a Travel Plan Coordinator to be responsible for implementing the individual measures, promote the plan itself, and act as a key contact for residents or occupiers.

A Travel Plan is a range of measures aimed at promoting sustainable travel within an organisation, or at a specific location, with an emphasis on reducing dependency on single occupancy car journeys.

Many Travel Plans are implemented as part of the planning process within Section 106 agreements or planning obligations.  It is therefore essential that their long term effectiveness and adherence to targets continue to be monitored.

Jon Pearson, Principal Consultant at Byways & Highways Ltd in Cornwall explains "a Travel Plan that does not continue to be monitored and amended as the process develops and changes will not be effective.  The service that we can offer means that monitoring of the Travel Plan and its targets is easy for our clients, as we will take on the Travel Plan Coordinator role (between 5-6 years), develop the measures in advance of occupation and provide a single point of contact for future users."

The service will be tailored to suit each Travel Plan but, in essence, we will ensure that annual data collection exercises are undertaken to monitor the effectiveness of the Travel Plan.  If necessary, we will then work with the Local Authority, School and Applicants to ensure the Travel Plan and its measures and targets are amended to ensure effectiveness.
